Sitting in one of the best seats in the house, Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela got a good view of what Mamelodi Sundowns have been about lately – guts and guile

At the James Motlatsi Stadium on Sunday, Komphela witnessed the would-be champions coming from behind in fine style against Free State Stars, as the Absa Premiership leaders ran out comfortable 5-2 winners to extend their lead at the top to six points.


Danny Venter gave the hosts the lead after just two minutes, making a great run in the Sundowns half.

Venter tried his luck from outside the box and beat Wayne Sandilands in Sundowns’ goal.

Sundowns were back on level terms when defender Wayne Arendse latched on to a loose ball in the box and finished from close range three minutes before the break.

Keagan Dolly came to the party in the second period with a goal just a minute before the hour mark, with a well-placed left-footed shot. Three minutes later in-form Leonardo Castro hustled his way into the Stars box before finding the back of the net with his left foot.

Billiat scored his seventh of the season from close range after Stars goalkeeper Daouda Diakite failed to hold onto Teko Modise’s cross. Substitute Mogakolodi Ngele’s brilliant solo run resulted in a fine goal in the final five minutes.

Hendrik Somaeb scored a second for Stars late on.

Sunday saw 14 goals scored in the three matches.

Ajax Cape Town have broken into the top eight following their 3-1 win over Stuart Baxter’s SuperSport United.

Ajax were in front just 21 minutes into the match when they won a corner and Erwin Isaacs delivered a great ball to find Tashreeq Morris in the box. The striker rose to head the ball into the back of the net.

The home side equalised through a thunderous strike by Kingston Nkhatha on the stroke of halftime. The Zimbabwean scored on the volley after receiving a pin-point ball from Thato Mokeke.

Ten minutes into the second half, Isaacs was back to torment Clayton Daniels and company in SuperSport’s defence. Isaacs played a through ball to Toriq Losper who was waiting in the box and the latter guided the ball home at the near post to give Ajax a deserved 2-1 lead.

In the 74th minute, Prince Nxumalo put the final nail in the coffin after a deep forward pass.

  • At the Royal Bafokeng Stadium, Platinum Stars strolled to a 3-0 win over Polokwane City, thanks to goals from Sibusiso Msomi, Tlou Segolela and Robert Ng’ambi.
